Still got questions?

Find some frequently asked questions below, or contact us to get answers.

Will an impairment or disability rule me out?

VSO ICS actively aims to reflect the diversity of UK society. We are committed to inclusion and to meeting the individual needs of those who take part. We’ll do all we can to support your application, so please tell us about your specific needs in the relevant section of the application form.

What if I have an ongoing medical condition?

In order to ensure your continued good health and wellbeing while overseas, all volunteers will need to be medically cleared before setting off. You will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire at the assessment day, where staff will be on hand to help you.

Can I volunteer if I have a criminal record?

Having a criminal record won’t necessarily prevent you from volunteering with ICS; it all depends on the circumstances and background of the offence. All of our partners use the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to provide Enhanced Disclosures for all volunteers and are committed to complying with the DBS Code of Practice and Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. You will usually be asked to complete a DBS form at the assessment day, where staff will be on hand to help you.

Can I volunteer with ICS more than once?

No – because ICS aims to provide a life-enhancing opportunity to as many people as possible. You can’t apply again if you have taken part in any previous ICS programme. However, returned ICS volunteers with leadership and motivational skills can apply for team leader roles using the standard application form. Or you can consider other VSO volunteer opportunities.

Why is ICS only open to 18 to 25 year olds?

ICS is aimed at people who are at a formative stage in their lives. Volunteering at this age builds skills and attitudes that remain for life, both among UK volunteers and their partners overseas. However, VSO also has plenty of volunteer opportunities for people older than 25.

Safeguarding

ICS takes its responsibility for safeguarding and child protection seriously.

We will do all we can to ensure, as far as possible, the safety and protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults involved in ICS.

If you have concerns about the safety or well being of a young person or wish to talk to someone in confidence about a safeguarding issue please contact the ICS Lead Safeguarding Officer at ICS on +44 (0)208 780 7500 or sarah.moon@volunteerics.org.
