Globetrotting VSO volunteers hit the streets of London in Sunday’s marathon

Hannah Al-Othman is one of 14 people registered to run the London Marathon for VSO this Sunday, hoping to raise a total of over £30,000 for the charity.  VSO is the world’s leading international development organisation that uses volunteers to fight poverty and reduce inequality.

Hannah volunteered with VSO in Cambodia between 2010 and 2011 as a Community Education Advisor.  When she was there, she used to wake up really early to run to beat the heat before 8am. In the final month of her placement she ran around Cambodia’s famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

“I’ve been running on-and-off for ten years or so, but really got back into it just over two years ago and managed to lose quite a lot of weight. This will be my first marathon so it’s a really big step for me but I really want to raise funds to support the kind of teacher training work I was involved in,” she said this week as she made the final preparations for her run and a last push on fundraising.

Among the other runners is Jon Armstrong, son of Hilary Armstrong MP and also Chair of the VSO Federation Council, who is a keen runner and long time supporter of VSO.

Hannah Gilman, VSO’s Brand and Communications Manager, is one 3 staff members running alongside the volunteers. Based in Sheffield, she is running her 5th marathon and has just returned from a visit to the VSO country office in Myanmar, where running involved 5:30am starts, escaping rabid dogs and running around Mandalay Palace. She runs with the Smiley Paces Club in Sheffield during the year.

“I run wherever I go, it’s a fantastic way to capture local life, see new areas and it can lead to a lot of pointing and laughing! Some volunteers I’ve met developed strange patterns to keep up the running...one was out at 5am in the jungle with a guard while on placement in Papua New Guinea. We all share a passion for getting our trainers on, getting out of breath and seeing life outside our homes and work places,” said Hannah this week, who is hoping to raise funds to support the work with fishing communities in Myanmar.

VSO are now accepting applications for their 2016 London Marathon team
